Vienna Sights

Two days of sightseeing in Vienna (and two of conferencing) is far from enough to see all there is to see in this overwhelming and imposing architectural and cultural hub - so I ended up with pretty sore feet. But had fun exploring the myriad of details in the city. Here are some of the things that caught my eye:

The prototypical conference experience: people blogging or surfing away while the presenter is talking...(most other conference pictures were unfortunately blurry, still havent made the shutter work perfectly).

Karlskirche - view from the front.

Detail from Karlskirche - from the dome which was accessible for the public this period. Did they really believe then that angels carried the world around?

Schwartzwalder-Kirsh Torte. Calorie-heaven. And melting on the tongue.

However not all aspects of Austrian food culture are equally tempting. This is a local version of the "insalata mixta", complete with fried egg, "plastic" ham, peas, maize, slices of orange and lemon...and yes, a bit of salad beneath it all.

In the Museumsquartier they had pink plastic "couches" outdoors and wireless internet. What a brilliant way to attract the geeks to the art scene...

View from Freud's toilet - "The Interpretation of Dreams" bag at Berggasse 19 - where the consultation and Freud's private lodgings also was.

I started seeing fallic symbols all over town, even before I went to the Sigmund Freud museum ;). This is a road blocker spotted in front of one of the government buildings.

...and from the ground floor windows at the House of Justice.

The parlament - power is sexy! But note that it is actually women who are carrying it on their heads (Ps. Surprisingly, it's a Dane who built the parlament and several other neoclassic Vienna sites: Theophilius Hansen).

At Upper Belvedere Castle (where Klimt's The Kiss is exhibited): a female sphinx wearing a see-through t-shirt biding the visitors welcome.

Otto Wagner Pavillion at Karlsplatz - Art Nouveau Architecture at its most classic phase.

A class of gespritzer redwine at the Hundertwasser House.

Vienna is not all "old stuff". In fact, The New Media have their very own agentur in Vienna.

And finally, a classic sight from a city with an enormous amount of sculptures and white marble: a sculpture of actor and playright Ferdinand Raimund. Decadence, art and flowers. Whipcream Vienna.
