Bloghome at www.klastrup.dk

This is the research diary of researcher Lisbeth Klastrup, since february 2001 sharing her thoughts on life, universe, persistent online worlds, games, interactive stories and internet oddities with you on the www.

I am currently on leave from the IT University of Copenhagen, and from aug. 2006 - aug. 2007 working as Associate Research Professor at the Center for Design Research Copenhagen, an independant center situated at the School of Architecture. During this year, I will be working on a book about the development of aesthetics, design and interaction on the WWW, together with colleague Ida Engholm.

My blog often reflects how busy I am in general, so posting may be pretty irregular, as well as my potential response to comments. But I read them!

List of literature on (interactive) experience (in progress)
Yesterday I finally completed my first version of a long due article for the Proceedings of the Virtual 2006 conference, titled "A Note on Interactive Experience". One reason why it has taken me so long is that writing a meaningful piece on this concept has really required a lot of thinking, I mean what is "interactive experience" Really and does it make sense at all to talk about it? It has also required a deligent search for relevant literature on experience in a digital context, as it turned out that not a lot of dedicated literature exist. An upside though is that this literature list will also be useful for some other current papers on various forms of experiences with digital media that Im writing. I thought some of you might find it relevant too, so here goes:

Books:
Jay, Martin: Songs of Experience (2005)

Koskinen I., Battarbee K., and Mattelmäki T. (eds.) Empathic Design: User
Experience in Product Design
(2003)

Koster, Raph: A Theory of Fun for Gamedesign (2004)

McCarthy & Wright: Technology as Experience (2004)

Pine & Gilmore: The Experience Economy (1999) (NB! not for introducing the concept of exp economy but because they have a nice little model of different forms of experience)

Turner & Bruner (Eds): The Anthropology of Experience (1986)

Articles:
Ermi, Laura & Mäyrä, Frans (2005): "Fundamental Components of the Gameplay Experience: Analysing Immersion." Proceedings of the 2005 Digital Games Research Association Conference: Changing Views – Worlds in Play. Vancouver 2005, pp. 15-27.

Hassenzahl, Mark (2004): The Thing and I: Understanding the Relationship Between User & Product in Funology – From Usability to Enjoyment (ed. Blythe, Overbeeke, Monk & Wright). Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers, pp. 31-42

Hunicke, Robin, LeBlanc, Marc & Zubek Robert (2004): "MDA: A Formal Approch to Game Design and Game Research."

Hutchinson, Andrew (2005): The Natural Languages of Immersion. Proceedings of the Digital Arts & Cultures Conference 2005: Digital Experience: Design, Aesthetics, Practice. Copenhagen: IT University of Copenhagen, pp. 22-33.

Wright, Peter, McCarthy John & Meekison, Lisa (2004): Making Sense of Experience in Funology – From Usability to Enjoyment (ed. Blythe, Overbeeke, Monk & Wright). Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers, pp. 43-54.
