Klastrup's Cataclysms

This is the research diary of researcher Lisbeth Klastrup, since february 2001 sharing her thoughts on life, universe, persistent online worlds, games, interactive stories and internet oddities with you on the www.

I am currently on leave from the IT University of Copenhagen, and from aug. 2006 - aug. 2007 working as Associate Research Professor at the Center for Design Research Copenhagen, an independant center situated at the School of Architecture. During this year, I will be working on a book about the development of aesthetics, design and interaction on the WWW, together with colleague Ida Engholm.

My blog often reflects how busy I am in general, so posting may be pretty irregular, as well as my potential response to comments. But I read them!

What happened to Gary A Fine?

Tonight at the opening reception of Playing Roles, a participant asked me if I knew what has become of Gary Allan Fine, the sociologist who wrote the seminal book (to rolepaying researchers) Shared Fantasy. According to Google, he is currently a professor of sociology at Northwestern University, on leave, but before that engaged in the study of (amongst a lot of other things, his book production rate leaves me completely in awe) - the reputation of Adolf Hitler...He seems to have left rp-game studies completely?

Prof. Fine is coming back to the department at Northwestern next year. He's on leave this year at the Russel Sage Foundation doing research. He studies subcultures often, and I think he was mostly interested in that element of studying rp gamers. He's also written things on the culture of kitchen work, little league teams, etc.
